SUMMARY:💡 Developing Thinking Skills through CLIL: A Pathway to Meaningful English Learning
DESCRIPTION:The EventThe Speaker\n\n(Learn about the event on these tabs ⬆️. Register below ⬇️) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis presentation explores how thinking skills—both lower and higher order—can enhance English language learning within CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) environments. It highlights practical strategies for integrating cognitive tasks into language lessons\, fostering deeper understanding\, student autonomy\, and critical engagement. The session also shares classroom examples and reflections on how thinking routines can be adapted to different proficiency levels\, encouraging meaningful communication and content mastery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nLaura Pachajoa currently works as an English teacher at Colegio San Francisco Javier\, where she designs and delivers engaging lessons based on the national curriculum. “I create didactic materials\, support students’ individual learning needs\, and foster a positive classroom environment.” Previously\, she worked as an English assistant at Kumon (Unidad Palermo – Pasto)\, helping students strengthen their English skills through personalized guidance and structured practice. During her academic practicum at I.E.M. Artemio Mendoza Carvajal and I.E.M. Heraldo Romero Sánchez\, she gained hands-on experience in planning lessons\, managing classrooms\, and applying effective language teaching strategies tailored to students’ levels and contexts. \n\n\n\nShe graduated from Universidad de Nariño with a Bachelor’s Degree in Foreign Languages with an Emphasis in English (2019–2024). SUMMARY:LEC 💡 Metalinguistic Feedback to Foster the Writing Skill Through Task Activities: A Teaching Portfolio
DESCRIPTION:The EventThe Speaker\n\n(Learn about the event on these tabs ⬆️. Register below ⬇️) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn Colombia\, English is a mandatory subject in all academic institutions. Despite national policies requiring students to reach a B1 English level by the end of secondary school\, many students still struggle with writing skills\, showing frequent grammar\, spelling\, punctuation\, cohesion\, and coherence issues. To address this\, our proposal focuses on applying Metalinguistic Feedback as a key strategy for improving writing in B1 English students from a language center in Pasto. \n\n\n\nThrough 16 lesson plans based on Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT)\, students will receive metalinguistic feedback on their writing tasks\, allowing them to recognize and correct their mistakes while developing greater language awareness. The progress and outcomes will be documented in a teaching portfolio\, as a reflective tool to assess the strategy’s effectiveness. \n\n\n\nThis research aims to demonstrate how metalinguistic feedback can improve writing\, enhance learning self-regulation\, and contribute to better academic outcomes in English education. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nVanessa Buesaquillo and Angie Jimenez hold a BA English and Spanish and are currently MA students in Teaching English and Spanish as Foreign Languages at Universidad de Nariño \n\n\n\nBoth teachers have worked at Champagnat School ( Ipiales) and Nuestra Señora de las Lajas School (Pasto) in primary and secondary levels.

SUMMARY:S&C 🧩 Cooperative Jigsaw and Cooperative Card Activities in the Process of Improving Vocabulary Learning in English
DESCRIPTION:The EventThe Speaker\n\n(Learn about the event on these tabs ⬆️. Register below ⬇️) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCooperative Jigsaw and Cooperative Card activities are promising strategies for enhancing vocabulary retention and recall among English language learners. The Jigsaw strategy involves students becoming “experts” on specific vocabulary words or phrases\, allowing them to master meanings before teaching these terms to peers\, which reinforces their understanding and fosters a sense of community and interdependence. Cooperative Card activities further support vocabulary acquisition by encouraging collaboration and strengthening communication skills as students work together to match words with definitions or use them in sentences. This workshop will guide participants through developing two cooperative activities based on jigsaw and cooperative vocabulary cards which can help in promoting recall of the vocabulary. Moreover\, in this workshop\, we will develop a last activity to promote retention to show that those activities could help students to store the vocabulary in long-term memory. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAngie Nayive Benavides Martínez graduated with a bachelor’s degree in humanity English and Spanish Language at the University of Nariño in 2019\, and she is a student in the last semester of a master’s degree in teaching English and Spanish Language as a foreign language at the Nariño University. For one year\, she taught English academics in Orito Putumayo. Then\, She was an English teacher at Champagnat High School in Ipiales Nariño for 4 years\, and currently\, she is an English teacher at Bethlemites School Pasto. She is finishing her master’s degree in teaching English and Spanish as a foreign language. She was a presenter at the V International Conference on Professional Development: Factors Affecting Language Teaching and Learning Pasto\, September 25 – 27\, 2024. \n\n\n\nClaudia Lorena Botina Botina graduated with a bachelor’s degree in English and Spanish Language at the University of Nariño\, and she is a student in the last semester of a master’s degree in teaching English and Spanish Language as a foreign language at the Nariño University. SUMMARY:LEC 💡 E-Portfolios: An Alternative to Enhance Willingness to Communicate and Self-Efficacy in EFL Students
DESCRIPTION:The EventThe Speaker\n\n(Learn about the event on these tabs ⬆️. Register below ⬇️) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThis study explores the use of E-portfolios to enhance willingness to communicate (WTC) and self-efficacy (SE) in EFL students at the University of Nariño. Despite theoretical emphasis on communicative tasks\, practical implementation often falls short. This research seeks to bridge this gap by assessing the impact of E-portfolios on students’ WTC and SE. By comparing pre- and post-intervention results between control and experimental groups\, the study aims to provide evidence for E-portfolios as effective tools in fostering communication and confidence in language learning. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSantiago holds a BA in English and French from the University of Nariño. SUMMARY:S&C 🧩 Transforming the Way We Teach
DESCRIPTION:The EventThe Speaker\n\n(Learn about the event on these tabs ⬆️. Register below ⬇️) \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWords like evolution\, revolution\, acceleration and change are often used to refer to what is happening and emerging in the (re)design of education. These days\, hybrid practices and virtual practices involve the demolition of what we used to know as “normal” and with these forms the “old” model is being seriously questioned. Given these new scenarios in Education\, it should be noted that “Pre-pandemic Education” refers to an idea connected with exhausted practices and to models to which we do not want to return. In order to recognize what is emerging today\, we are forced to look at it from a complex perspective. With technological advances\, the immersion in virtual and augmented reality on the one side\, and the threatening issues that our world faces every day on the other side\, we\, the educators\, need to start leaving content aside and start raising awareness on what lies ahead. We urgently need to create new models of work and give a collective meaning to action. There is no doubt all this leads to the configuration of new emerging teachings in all aspects. This workshop will show what must be done right now to be part of the change. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nMarcela Alejandra Villán qualified as a Teacher of English in Argentina in 1996. She got a TESOL certification some years later. She is a passionate life long learner and at present\, she holds several diplomas: Diploma in School Management in NeuroSciences and Leadership\, in Socio Emotional Learning\, in Education Technology\, in Environmental Education and Global Citizenship and a Bachelor in English Language. She has worked in the field for more than 30 years\, preparing a great number of students for all kinds of Cambridge examinations. She has been a London University and Oxford University Examiner as well and has also worked extensively with Anglia University. \n\n\n\nAt the moment\, she teaches Environmental Sciences and Global Perspectives in a bilingual school in Buenos Aires\, where she lives. She is also a teacher trainer. Marcela supports the United Nations 2030 Agenda. She firmly believes in its inclusion in the classrooms. She is a TeachSDGs ambassador and a Global Schools advocate and works for different organizations trying to connect teachers and students around the World to take action towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
